The COVID-19 pandemic, supply issues, a rapid boom in eCommerce, and labor shortages have all affected the shipping market where parcel carrier’s are overwhelmed with business.
Because of this, parcel shippers need to understand:
- Carriers have the leverage in negotiations right now. An emotional, “I’ll take my business elsewhere” negotiation approach is no longer useful, because your carrier doesn’t need your business.
- You can harness your shipping data to determine areas of improvement in your operations. Not only does this reduce your costs, but showing your carrier how you’ve improved your efficiency, and become a better partner for them, can help you negotiate better rates.
- As capacity issues plague carriers, putting all your eggs in one basket is no longer an option. Find a healthy mix between multiple carriers, and even consider adding a regional carrier, who might be able to help you service a region with faster, lower-emission deliveries.
